Blackjack is a card game where you try to get a hand closer to 21 than the dealer’s without going over. It has one of the lowest house edges in the casino when played with sensible rules, but the edge never disappears. This guide explains the rules, the table terms that change the odds and the mistakes to avoid.

  • You play against the dealer, and your choices affect the result, so rules and decisions matter more than in most casino games.
  • A blackjack payout of 3 to 2 is better than 6 to 5. Check it before you sit down.
  • Basic strategy lowers the house edge but cannot remove it, and no approach guarantees winnings.

How blackjack works

You and the dealer each receive cards. Cards two to ten count at face value, face cards count as ten, and an ace counts as one or eleven. If your total goes over 21, you bust and lose the hand. If you have a better total than the dealer without busting, you win. A blackjack, an ace with a ten-value card on the first two cards, usually pays 3 to 2.

Your choices

  • Hit: take another card.
  • Stand: keep your total.
  • Double down: double your bet and take exactly one more card.
  • Split: if you have a pair, split it into two hands with a second bet.
  • Insurance: a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace. It is generally poor value, so most guides advise against it.

Table rules vary, including how many decks are used and whether the dealer stands or hits on a soft 17. Read the rules shown in the game before you play.

With basic strategy and favorable rules, the house edge is commonly cited at around 0.5%. A 6 to 5 payout raises it by roughly 1.4 percentage points, which is a large difference over many hands.

What the edge costs you

This is an illustration only. If you bet ₱200 across 100 hands, you wager ₱20,000 in total. At a 0.5% edge, the expected long-run loss is about ₱100. At roughly 1.9%, which is the same game with 6 to 5 payouts, it is about ₱380. Real sessions swing above and below these figures.

Check the blackjack payout line printed on the table or in the game rules. If it says 6 to 5, look for another table.

What is basic strategy?

Basic strategy is a chart of the mathematically best action for each combination of your hand and the dealer’s upcard. Following it makes your decisions consistent and lowers the house edge compared with guessing. It does not remove the edge or guarantee a winning session, and charts differ slightly by table rules. Treat it as a way to avoid costly mistakes, not as a way to profit.

Can you count cards online?

Card counting is not practical in online blackjack. Digital games typically use random shuffles each hand, and live tables often use many decks. Operators may also restrict players they believe are counting. Rely on learning the rules and setting limits instead.

Live and digital blackjack

Digital blackjack uses a random number generator. Live blackjack is dealt by a real dealer in a studio. Rules and edge depend on the table settings, not on whether it is live. Play only with operators on PAGCOR‘s records, and confirm with how to tell if an online casino is legit.

Common mistakes

  • Playing 6 to 5 tables: the lower payout quietly raises the house edge.
  • Taking insurance: it is generally poor value over the long run.
  • Playing by feel: guessing instead of following consistent decisions costs more over time.
  • Chasing losses: bigger bets after a loss do not change the odds.
  • Using bonus funds without reading the terms: table games often count for less toward wagering. See wagering requirements explained.
  • Trusting “winning system” sellers: see how to avoid online casino scams.

Play within your limits

  • Set deposit, loss and time limits before you start, and stop when you reach them.
  • Only play with money you can afford to lose. Players must be 21 or older.

FAQ

What is blackjack?

Blackjack is a card game where you try to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Cards two to ten count at face value, face cards count ten, and an ace counts one or eleven. A blackjack, an ace with a ten-value card, usually pays 3 to 2.

What is the house edge in blackjack?

With basic strategy and favorable rules, the house edge in blackjack is commonly cited at around 0.5%, though it varies by game. Rule changes, such as a 6 to 5 blackjack payout, raise it noticeably. A low edge still means long-run expected loss, so it does not make blackjack a way to profit.

Why does 3 to 2 versus 6 to 5 matter?

A blackjack pays ₱150 on a ₱100 bet at 3 to 2, but only ₱120 at 6 to 5, which raises the house edge. The difference is roughly 1.4 percentage points, so check the payout on the table before you sit down. If a table pays 6 to 5, consider another table.

Does basic strategy guarantee you win at blackjack?

No, basic strategy lowers the house edge by showing the mathematically best action for each hand, but it cannot remove the edge. Results over a session still swing up or down. Use strategy charts to make consistent decisions, and keep to your budget and time limits.

Can you count cards in online blackjack?

Card counting is not practical in online blackjack, because digital games typically use random shuffles every hand and live tables often use many decks. Operators may also restrict players they believe are counting. Rely on learning the rules and limits, not on techniques that promise an edge.
